Military Vasectomy - We want my partner to have a vasectomy, but we've heard that there are rules about vasectomy based on age, the number of children you currently have, and even the gender of the children. My husband's friend told him that the doctor told him he couldn't do a vasectomy unless they were over 30, or had three children of both sexes, or only had two, a boy and a girl. Is this true?
We've heard many conflicting reports about vasectomies and. And everyone you ask seems to have a different answer.
Military Vasectomy
There are two types of vasectomy coverage - one for dependents and the other for military members.

For dependents who receive healthcare through Tricare, Tricare's policy is that the vasectomy guidelines are very strict and dry. (Forgive the murder.)
If the patient is dependent, he or she may refer to a urologist (if on Tricare Standard) or receive a referral from their primary care manager (if on Tricare Prime). Tricare itself has no age or number of children requirements, although the urologist may tell him to wait. But they don't cover cancellations, so you better make sure spaying is what you want.
For active service members, things are a bit more complicated and access to the procedure is highly dependent on the service provider.
According to Pentagon officials, there are no hard-and-fast (again, wordplay...) vasectomy rules for active-duty members. While some states require a "cool-down period" between signing the consent form and performing the surgery, none of the services have written rules.

But here's where things get messy: Because there are no specific rules, it's entirely up to the attending physician, and even the physician assistant in his unit, whether or not a soldier is allowed to have a vasectomy. This is where the rules your husband's friend hears come into play.
A doctor at Madigan Army Medical Center in Washington may have different rules about who should perform the procedure than a urologist at Maryland's National Naval Medical Center.
"There are accepted standards for clinically evaluating a sterilization procedure, including patient age, number of children, reasons for requesting the procedure, etc," Pentagon spokesman Major James Brindle said in a written statement. "Many of these can be subjective, so determining whether a patient is a good candidate for the procedure ultimately depends on the provider's independent clinical judgment."
As for reversals, some hospitals will make them for active members; however, there is usually a long waiting list.
