Sturm, & Co., Inc. is one of the leading domestic manufacturers of durable and reliable firearms for the commercial sporting market. With products made in America, it offers consumers nearly 800 varieties in more than 40 product lines under the Marlin and Marlin brands. For nearly 75 years, Sturm, & Co., Inc. is a model of corporate and social responsibility. Our motto "Gunmakers for Responsible Citizens®" reflects our commitment to these principles as we work hard to deliver high quality and innovative firearms. With all the modern semi-automatic pistols available, revolvers are often overlooked. They have fewer rounds, take longer to charge, and quality examples are expensive. However, I still maintain that wheel pistols still have a place for emergency defensive use and may even be a suitable choice for everyday carry - revolvers like the S&W 340PD.
Smith and Wesson J-Frame revolvers have been popular carry options for decades. They are easy to maintain and do not require frequent oiling or lint removal after months of wear. The barrel can be pressed against the attacker and the weapon will still fire at contact distance.
The S&W 340PD is also easy to carry in your pocket. This makes continuous daily carry a breeze for those who don't want to carry a larger gun, and provides a discreet option for those who need deep concealment. Some models without a hammer can also be launched from a coat pocket or bag.
My Edc: Ruger Lcr .357
Additionally, J frames have a heavier trigger pull than most semi-autos, especially typical striker-fired options. This adds another layer of security that many shooters are comfortable with. There are many different J-frames on the market, but I believe the 340PD is the most unique.
The Smith and Wesson 340PD is no ordinary J-Frame revolver, it is the world's lightest .357 Magnum revolver. This is achieved with a scandium alloy frame and a titanium cylinder. Scandium is stronger and lighter than aluminum, and titanium is a lightweight alternative to steel. These two elements combine to create a powerful .357 Magnum revolver that is incredibly light. The very touch of the S&W 340PD exudes a sense of incredibly high quality.
With the change in materials, S&W added an ejection rod cover and improved the front sight. There are versions with a red ramp, fiber optic or tritium night sight; all use gutter flies. I chose the version with the red ramp bow tie because it doesn't have an internal zipper.
One of the fun parts of revolvers is changing the grips. I replaced the rubber arm grips with Hogue G10 grips. They're not as good at taming recoil at long range, but they're less likely to snag in a carry bag. They fit well on the body and the seams fit nicely.
The .357 Magnum: Most Versatile Handgun Round Ever?
Since this is such a light, compact revolver, there are many carry options. Most will wear this model around the waist. I often carry the 340PD in a leather IWB holster or a DeSantis Slim-Tuk Kydex IWB holster. I lean more towards Slim-Tuk, as it holds firmly and has minimal thickness. The S&W 340PD is small enough to carry discreetly OWB with just a shirt sheath. For belt carry, I prefer the DeSantis Mini Scabbard. It's an excellent low-profile option that carries the gun close to the body.
As I mentioned before, J-Frames are generally great for pockets, but the lightweight materials make you forget you're even carrying the 340PD. Using a Sticky Holster will help cover the trigger and prevent an accidental shot. Ankle carry is another good option, especially if you plan to use the snob as a backup weapon. Although I don't wear it that way, the Galco Ankle Glove seems to be the gold standard.
The Smith and Wesson 340PD is definitely not the best pistol for target shooting or long range game, but it wasn't designed to be. It is inherently a carry weapon. But that doesn't mean it isn't accurate. The pistol showed excellent accuracy for self-defense at close range. The heavy double-action trigger and short aiming radius take some getting used to. At 7 yards I was able to get groups a little larger than the size of my hand, not great but not terrible. With practice I'm sure you can reduce it a bit.
Recoil was another matter. Shooting was absolutely tolerable with the .38 Special load. Similar to your standard Airweight revolvers. .38 +P Special Defense rounds were significantly more powerful, but still manageable.
Kimber K6s Dcr Revolver
However, firing .357 Magnum rounds will rock your world. It's better to have a firm grip and proper technique if you want to hit something, especially on consecutive shots. This is not a gun for novice shooters or those sensitive to recoil. Although in practice the 340PD can be an accurate and reliable firearm.
Above the cylinder slot is a steel insert that protects the scandium frame. Note the warning on the barrel not to use cartridges with bullets lighter than 120 grains.
The Smith and Wesson 340PD brings the revolver into the modern era with amazing improvements in design and materials. This featherweight is an absolute dream to carry and packs a punch. Try this gun on wheels and it will definitely be your next one
