Until recently, the most common compact .45 caliber handgun was known as the Officer's Model. A derivative of the 1911A1 government, it was finally superseded in 2011 by a much lighter pistol – the Glock 36. The 1911 .45 caliber pistol designed by John Moses Browning was one of the most successful pistols of all time. Adopted by the US Armed Forces during World War I, it lasted through World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam, and the waning years of the Cold War. The slab-sided, all-steel pistol was large, heavy and attractive, but it was also durable and could last for decades. Colts Manufacturing later developed and released a smaller and lighter version, the Colt Commander, but it failed to gain traction to replace the original 1911A1.

Another pistol made by Colt, the Colt Officer's model, took the pistol further, reducing the barrel length by an inch and a half and the overall weight by half a pound. The result was a smaller, lighter, more compact version of the 1911A1 better suited to mechanized army officers who spent a lot of time in the confined spaces of armored vehicles or aircraft. The tradeoff was an increased tendency for the shooter to experience muzzle flip, but it was worth pairing the .45 cartridge with a shorter barrel.

The Glock 36, like all Glock variants in all calibers and variants, is essentially the original Model 17. Glock pistols eschew the traditional hammer and firing pin system, especially common in older pistols for a striker-fire system where the striker contacts the firing pin. In striker-fired pistols, the pistol is semi-cocked when the slide is racked and a round is chambered – the pistol is fully cocked and released with a pull of the trigger. It allows multiple safety mechanisms to be embedded in the striker-fired system, including trigger safety, firing pin safety, and trigger safety.
Another feature lacking in the 1911 Glock was the use of polymer to reduce weight. All Glocks use a polymer frame and grip, reinforced in some places with steel, to hold the magazine and fire control group. Additionally, the use of polymer allows the Glock to reduce weight by four-ounces when possible. The Glock 36 still uses a steel slide, barrel, guide parts and other parts to counter and chamber the gun's cartridges.

The overall length of the Glock 36 is 6.97 inches with a barrel length of 3.78 inches. Its overall width is 1.18 inches. It weighs just 22.4 ounces with the magazine unloaded, and a loaded magazine of seven rounds makes the weight 26.81 ounces. The Springfield Armory Range Officer Compact, an example of an officer-type pistol produced today, is 7.6 inches long with a 4-inch barrel. An all-steel gun, it weighs 28.5 ounces unloaded, a quarter pound more than the Glock. The Range Officer Compact has the same magazine capacity as its Glock competitor, six rounds – plus an extra round in the chamber.
Both the Colts officer type pistol and the Glock 36 are smaller versions of pistols intended for military service. Both have their pros and cons—some users may prefer the open hammer of the Colt or the Colt's all-steel design—but as sub-compact pistols, the American and Austrian pistols bring nothing new to their full-size versions. The barrel length of the Glock 30 is 3.78 inches, versus 4.61 inches for the full-size Glock. The Pistol 30 weighs 23.81 ounces unloaded and 33.69 ounces fully loaded. The difference between the two widths is entirely due to the G30's use of the .45 ACP round. The G30's magazine holds ten .45 rounds in a staggered, dual column arrangement. Like all semi-automatic pistols, a Glock accommodates an extra round in the chamber in addition to the full magazine.

Although small, the G30 doesn't skimp on raw power. Glock's .45 Subcompact suffers from less muzzle flip than other larger caliber, small frame handguns. The recoil of the .45 ACP round, generally considered a strong recoil, is generally rated as lower than expected for a lightweight gun. Powerful, reliable and controllable, the G30 may be Glock's ultimate subcompact handgun.
