The HK USP compact holds a very special place in my heart. It was my first handgun and I shot that pistol for the first five years. I think the first gun you own always has a special place in your heart. The USP Compact was the first handgun I bought and learned to shoot. Fortunately, I still own it today and still enjoy putting it in this range.

I picked up my HK USP Compact in 2004 at Jays Sporting Goods in Gaylord, Michigan for $848.99. Since this was my first handgun, I went back and forth between the HK, the SIG Sauer P229, and the Glock 19 Gen 2. I chose the USP Compact based on the feel in my hand and basic ergonomics. I planned to conceal the gun and also wanted to shoot with IDPA, so I settled for a compact frame size.

Before I bought my HK I put 2000-3000 rounds through my uncle's Glock 17 Gen2. The Glock shot flawlessly during the first few months of learning to shoot. I could have bought the Glock, but I wanted to try something different to see what I liked. I was a teenager at the time and although it was controllable and light, the HK fit my hand better. A few things like the magazine release and DA/SA trigger were different, but things got easier with practice. Competing with the HK USP Compact was a little unusual compared to the older guys running Smith & Wesson 686s and Kimber 1911s.
Despite being black sheep territory, I loved how good and consistent USP was in every match I attended. My biggest issue with the gun was the polymer trigger and the amount of flex in it. Since this was my first handgun, I didn't notice the difference in the triggers until I switched. After a few years of owning a HK, I decided to switch to my SIG Sauer P226. Honestly, in the grand scheme of things, the HK USP trigger isn't terrible by any means. The USP is a recoil pulse that goes straight back and is very easy to control for quick follow-up shots. Over time I learned to depress the HK mag release with my trigger finger for faster reloading. After a while, the USP was a great gun in the IDPA arena, but the 226 and other guns fit my needs a bit better.
The overall design of the HK USP compact is 23 years old, so it cannot be considered new. It holds up surprisingly well compared to what's available today. With the full magazine, the USP Compact is very well balanced. Easy to shoot and clean gun, easy to disassemble, consists of 4 main parts. In terms of disassembly, the USP Compact is similar to other modern handguns, easy to disassemble and assemble. The biggest thing that I think the USP is at a disadvantage is primarily capacity. The standard flush magazine holds 13 rounds, which is not much compared to the SIG P365 and Springfield Hellcat. Modern variations of the HK, such as the VP9, have a larger capacity. Overall, it was a good concealed carry option at the time.
Overall, I'd say if you've always wanted a USP compact then definitely get one. Mine is reliably bulletproof with any type of ammo. I still often carry my USP compact, even though it's not the latest and greatest option. It may not have the capabilities or features of a modern handgun, but it's a workhorse and I still trust it with my life. Tell us what you think of the USP Compact 23 years after its launch. The Heckler & Koch VP9 (known as the SFP9 in Europe and Canada) is a polymer-framed semi-automatic percussion-fired handgun. The designation VP in the name refers to Volkspistol, which means "people's pistol".

It has been in development for over four years and is Heckler & Koch's first striker-fired pistol since the introduction of the P7 series pistols in the 1980s. Most striker-fired handguns have a pre-travel pull that adds weight as the shooter pushes it back. The VP9 trigger has a short, soft start with a solid, single-action type pause followed by a short positive reset. The average stock trigger has a pull weight of 5.2 pounds

Both the VP9 and VP40 use Heckler & Koch's ergonomic pistol grip, which features three interchangeable backstraps and six side panels that allow the pistol to fit any hand size.

Although influenced by other HK models, the VP9 has some innovations of its own. The controls are completely opaque. The slide is located on both sides of the frame, and the magazine release is easy to activate for left- or right-handed shooters.

HK's patented charging support is new. These are simple parts that are mounted on either side of the rear of the slide and provide a better grip for securing the slide to the rear. It supports charge rate reloading and makes the VP9 easier for shooters to operate with less hand effort. The VP pistol uses the same steel magazines as the Heckler and Koch P30 in 15- and 10-round capacity configurations.
The VP9 features a full-size Picatinny MIL-STD-1913 rail molded into a polymer frame for mounting lights and accessories. The rail is tested and certified to handle heavy mounted accessories as its sheer size adds rigidity. This stiffness gives the VP9 superior capabilities compared to some of its polymer competitors, whose frames flex during use and cannot support the weight of some mid- and large-sized lights.
In the United States, the VP9 is available from retailers as a standard package (includes a standard three-dot sight and two magazines) or a "LE" (Low Foresight) package (includes factory-fitted tritium night sights and three magazines). Night sights are Maprolite True-Dot.
In late 2018, HK introduced the VP9 B (B stands for "button"), equipped with a push-button magazine release, in response to US market preferences. In January 2020, HK updated the VP9 design with a sliding cut-out to mount the pistol's red dot optic, a new high-capacity 17-round magazine in place of the 15-round magazines, and iron sights with a blacked-out rear paddle sight. replaces the previous three-point setup as a completely new standard feature of the pistol.
