It was designed at the request of the Bavarian State Police, to replace the HK P7. Since HK has a long history of using trigger guns, they decided to update their line with a newly designed trigger ball system that gives their guns the feeling of a clean break, trigger one level.
The original name for the gun was the “P30X”, since it was actually a lighter version of the Heckler & Koch P30.

This strength gives VP9 a higher strength compared to some polymer competitors whose frames change during use and cannot support the weight of some medium and large lights.

The experience gained by HK engineers with the recent P30 rifle had a direct impact on the design of the VP9, but the VP9 breaks new ground with the inclusion of a unique firing system and improved HK "firearm". The end result is a trigger quality unmatched in any bolt action rifle.
