Spreading Love This Valentine's Day
WASHINGTON — For many couples, Valentine's Day is more than just a fun holiday and the exchange of chocolates and flowers, it's also an opportunity to celebrate the joys and sacrifices that come with enduring love.
Military couples understand this all the more because they have to deal with the challenges that training, jobs, and deployments bring to relationships. Here, three stories from the past year show the strong bond between soldiers and their loved ones.
It's easy to appreciate the work and dedication required to complete a Reserve Training Corps program at a top-ranked university. Cadets must complete all necessary training to become an officer that meets the requirements of their academic qualifications. A degree and a degree is a great achievement.
Clemson University ROTC cadet Allen Robertson decided he could do one better than the other: on the same day — at the same time, in fact — in 2017. On May 10, he will be a US officer and his girlfriend.

At the end of his last semester of college, Robertson, an accountant from Mooresville, North Carolina, left Clemson with a second lieutenant on his shoulder. But if he's going to be the best soldier he can be, he'll have to bring someone else, or rather someone else, to his first duty station: Chelsea Campbell, his Clemson teammate and the love of his life.
Mutual friends introduced them in 2016. in September and within months Robertson knew he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her.
After the ceremony, Robertson hatched a plan to lure Campbell to his favorite spot in Clemson, a tree-lined park in the middle of campus. He enlisted the help of 15 of his colleagues and used the photographer's trick of taking a group photo of them all in bright sunlight, under the shade of trees.
After the induction ceremony, all 15 new second lieutenants took a short walk to the park and formed a semicircle. To end the meeting, a few group photos were taken, after which Robertson asked Campbell to join him in front of the group. Luckily, he relented and got down on one knee to pop the question.

Chelsea's father Scott Campbell couldn't hold back the tears as he watched his daughter and her boyfriend take the next step in their lives.
"I'm proud in every way, shape and form," he said. "He's a great guy. He's going to Fort Campbell, where he's going to host Chelsea, and he's going to protect our country. I'm blessed to have them."
What resources do couples need for a successful wedding? A National Guardsman couple's recent wedding included a stunner, a Hall of Famer, and a vehicle that became their "getaway" car.
Ch. Donald Hamilton, a team leader with Company A, 1st Battalion, 79th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, met with his wife, Spc. Rainey Jackson months before they both left to settle in Ukraine. Jackson, who serves with the 700th Brigade Support Battalion, 45th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, predicted that Chicago would win the Major League Baseball Championship. When the Cubs won the World Series, Hamilton took it as a sign.

Not even Hurricane Harvey tearing up the Texas coast can stop their wedding plans.
"We were planning the wedding in November, but it happened later," he said of the call to Texas and subsequent recovery missions. "It took months and months of planning, and they put (the department's order) together in three days."
During those three days, the United Service Organization, dedicated to boosting the morale of service members, lined up to provide food and drink. Photographers were in charge, and local pastor Mike Deasy, a member of the Nashville Musicians Hall of Fame, provided music.
Deasy provided music for the newlyweds before and after the wedding. "There's a lot to play for them and the soldiers here." - We owe them a lot.
